As Ruan de Swardt sy doelwitte op die rugby- en krieketveld vanjaar verwesenlik, sal hy homself by ’n uitgelese groep aansluit.
De Swardt mik daarna om in albei dié sportsoorte die Suid-Afrikaanse Skole-span te haal. Slegs 11 sportsterre kon daarin slaag om dié prestasie te behaal sedert die eerste nasionale skolerugbyspan in 1974 gekies is.
Die eerste SA Skole-krieketspan is reeds in 1940 gekies.
Die laaste sportster wat dit kon vermag, was Adrian Penzhorn van Maritzburg College.
Die eerste twee was Lee Barnard (King Edward VII) en Malcolm Thompson (Maritzburg College) in 1974.
“Dit raak moeilik om albei die sportsoorte te beoefen en ek het soms nie genoeg tyd nie,” sê De Swardt.
Patches, soos sy vriende hom noem, was verlede jaar op die nasionale Akademie-week in Vanderbijlpark met 57 punte die voorste puntemaker op die toernooi.
Hy het drie drieë gedruk, 12 drieë verdoel, met vyf strafdoele geslaag en ook ’n skepdoel tussendeur die pale gejaag vir sy punte.

“Ek dink ek was oorgerus in die eerste wedstryd teen Paul Roos verlede jaar, maar ek het in die volgende wedstryd teen EG Jansen van die bank af speelkans gekry en van daar af het die seisoen beter gegaan,” sê hy.
De Swardt glo sy span se wedstryd teen die Hoër Jongenskool Paarl op Wildeklawer in Kimberley kan moontlik hul taaiste wedstryd van 2016 wees.
Affies se sege oor Grey-kollege van Bloemfontein verlede jaar is sover De Swardt se hoogtepunt op die rugbyveld, terwyl die Cubs-week in Stellenbosch vir hom uitgestaan het op die krieketveld.
De Swardt was met sy veelsydige vertonings een van die Titans se staatmakers in die Eikestad. Hy het onder die voorste tien boulers op die toernooi getel, deur sewe paaltjies teen ’n gemiddeld van 18.71 lopies per slagoffer te laat kantel.
Sy boulwerk was ook ekonomies. Hy het 2.84 lopies per boulbeurt in sy 46 boulbeurte afgestaan.
De Swardt het as stertkantkolwer 119 lopies teen ’n gemiddeld van 23.80 lopies ’n hele paar keer sy span uit die moeilikheid gehelp.
Volgens Patches het sy broer Jacques, sy persoonlike afrigter, Frans Bezuidenhout, asook die skool se twee afrigters Deon Botes en Piet Cronjé die grootste invloed op sy krieket.
As dit kom by rugby, speel Affies se breier, Jan-Hendrik Hattingh, die grootste rol.
Sy broer Jacques het in 2013 kragte saam met Wayde van Niekerk, Pieter Conradie en PC Beneke gespan om die bronsmedalje op die Wêreldstudentespele in die 4x400m te verower.
Jacques het Suid-Afrika in 2010 in die 400 m op die Wêreld-juniorkampioenskap in Kanada verteenwoordig.
